Magic and Mud AlbumReleased September 1, 2017, Magic and Mud is the realization of 10 songs I wrote over the last several years, and that I thought together would represent my personal musical and poetic passions.

It’s my first solo record. As a semi-pro musician, I developed the material in my spare time, learning how to mix, master, and produce by studying and experimenting. I performed, recorded, and programmed all the instruments.

I hope you like it!

Lyrics

1. Magic and Mud

Hello Mister Coffee in the morning
Black as night
You lift me up with magic and mud
Make me feel alright, I feel alright

My baby passes me a cup of tears
Warmed by the sun
She says it’s made of magic and mud
Like everyone

For the last time / When it’s time to go
For the last time / I say no, no, no
I’m alive, I ain’t holding on

Now I’m floating in the sky
Still wondering about magic and mud
In the morning light

For the last time / When it’s time to go
For the last time / I say no, no, no
I’m alive, I ain’t holding on

2. The Way to Paradise

When the fire fades, but the embers burn
I still see your face at every turn
I want to touch your core / I want to follow your dreams
These words of war / Ain’t what they seem

I would caress your hair / And if my soul could speak
It would whisper there / Is the love you seek

It’s a long, hard road / And I’ve been inside
And I’ve seen the way / To Paradise

Face to the rain / Back to the sun
I got a burn in my belly / And I’m trying not to hurt anyone

I’ll bleed you dry / If you ask me to
I’ll reach like a pillar from the stars / Right into you

It’s a long, hard road / And I’ve been inside
And I’ve seen the way / To Paradise

Let me take you in my arms and say / You know I love you so
But the funny thing is I can’t bring / Myself to let it show
To let it show / Let it show

Sometimes I’m afraid / To look myself in the face
I made a bargain with the devil in me and the demons I chase
I want to touch your core / I want to swallow your dreams
These words of war / Ain’t what they seem

It’s a long, hard road / And I’ve been inside
And I’ve seen the way / To Paradise
It’s a long, hard road / And I’ve been inside
And I’ve seen the way / To Paradise
To Paradise / To Paradise

3. Lay My Body Down

I could be sitting in my chair
Without a worry or a care
Oh no. Suddenly I feel unwell

Or maybe driving in my car
I needn’t travel very far
Lock the doors. I think I’m singing au revoire

Oh-oh, oh-oh / Oh-oh / Lay my body down, I’m singing
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Scatter it around / Lay my body down

Mister Figgy’s on the rise
Spreads his wings and shuts his eyes
No El can save him from a swift demise

Now you’re slipping into dreams
Sharing crumpets with the queen
Take a bow. You’ve played a lovely farewell scene

Oh-oh, oh-oh / Oh-oh / Lay my body down, I’m singing
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Scatter it around / Lay my body down

Lay down my friend
In the cool, cool earth
Let it go like a fallen tree

Lay down my friend
This is birth, not the end
And all that you were
Is all you will be

Oh-oh, oh-oh / Oh-oh / Lay my body down, I’m singing
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Scatter it around / Lay my body down

4. Byzantine Blues

From the jangle of the village parade
Floats a shiny melody
Making promises
To wash your tears away / Wash your tears away

So the people gathered ‘round the band
Called the Byzantine Blues
Look out, Brother
When the maestro waves his hand / They sing…

Oh.. / Do do do…
Oh.. / Do do do…
It’s the same old song / From Hollywood to Babylon
Oh.. / Do do do…

When the maestro packs his gold baton
For the last time
The singers linger
To share one final round / And sing

Oh.. / Do do do…
Oh.. / Do do do…

I don’t see your face anymore
And I don’t hear your song I adore
Goodbye

As I wander past the Colonnade
Down the faded avenue
I catch a whisper
Of a sweet and mournful tune / Let it ring

Oh.. / Do do do…
Oh.. / Do do do…
It’s the same old song / From Hollywood to Babylon
Oh.. / Do do do…

5. Your Juice Ain’t Worth the Squeeze

I’m giving you up
Like a psychedelic rain
Pouring down on my face
This is the last time
I swear on my life

You had my back
Up against the wall
Five meters tall
I’m looking down
On a long fall to the ground

Your juice ain’t worth the squeeze
Your love is my disease
But I can’t resist the pressure
Your pleasure guarantees
Your juice ain’t worth the squeeze

You pick me up
Like sugar on a spoon
In a haze of violet perfume
I could stay
One more day

You’re telling me lies
That I’m ready to receive
I believe, I believe, I believe
Hit me again
I need to ease my pain

Your juice ain’t worth the squeeze
Your love is my disease
But I can’t resist the pressure
Your pleasure guarantees
Your juice ain’t worth the squeeze

Desire
What healer holds the cure
Fire
How it burns, will I ever learn

This crush fades away
Don’t come again to play
I think of you every day
Now you’re gone gone gone

Your juice ain’t worth the squeeze
Your love is my disease
But I can’t resist the pressure
Your pleasure guarantees

Your juice ain’t worth the squeeze
Your love is my disease
But I can’t resist the pressure
Your pleasure guarantees
Your juice ain’t worth the squeeze

6. Tumble Me Dry

Meet me in the back
Of Sweet Susie’s laundry shack
I’ve got five bucks worth of quarters
And two shots at the bar

Where boys get frisky
With all those panties and whiskey
And women get woozy
Like Nancy and Susie

Tumble me dry
In a long rotation
‘Cause the world I’m facing
Is tattered and torn

Let me run
In your delicate cycle
It’s a soft revival
That washes the tears I cried
Tumble me dry

You can call me sentimental
But this dive is my temple
I came bloodied and broke
Never knowing the score

Now I listen to the din
Of souls as they spin
In a chorus of linen
But all’s not forgiven

Tumble me dry
In a long rotation
‘Cause the world I’m facing
Is tattered and torn

Let me run
In your delicate cycle
It’s a soft revival
That washes the tears I cried
Tumble me dry

If you’re feeling low
It’s not far from home
You go there
And you clean up a little

With some good friends
Good friends

Tumble me dry
In a long rotation
‘Cause the world I’m facing
Is tattered and torn

Let me run
In your delicate cycle
It’s a soft revival
That washes the tears I cried
Tumble me dry

7. Manitou’s Head

Maybe I was lost
Maybe I was too high to fly back home
What if I had passed
Into the realm where my ancestors roam

I looked to the West
Where a golden sun set fire to silver peaks
Then I laid down to rest
Beneath a solitary pinon tree

There’s still a little tenderness
In my Colorado heart

Rivers I have crossed
Rise like ghosts, and fall as snow
Diamonds in the frost
Glisten as above, so below

Sailing on a prayer
An ancient call to freedom come
Breathing music like the air
I fall into the rhythm of the drums

There’s still a little tenderness
In my Colorado heart

I’m living in Manitou-ah’s head
I’m sleeping in Manitou-ah’s bed
Winter is come…

Ahhh / Ahhh / Ahhh
It is the only thing / I know

I’m living in Manitou-ah’s head
I’m sleeping in Manitou-ah’s bed
Winter is come…

8. SHTF

Ohhhh / Ohhhh / Ohhhh

Down in the shadows of my mind
She calls me, how can I turn away

This old heart racer hits the starting line
And it’s alright / It’s okay

I’m running / I’m running / I’m running
‘Cause the shit hit the fan

Words unspoken on the radio
Foretell the coming eschaton

I pay my token / To the latest troll
Black light / May day

I’m running / I’m running / I’m running
‘Cause the shit hit the fan

It’s a long, proud tradition, my old friend
To save one’s ass before its end

Ohhhh / Ohhhh / Ohhhh

Alright / Okay
I’m running / I’m running / I’m running
‘Cause the shit hit the fan
I’m running / I’m running / I’m running
‘Cause the shit hit the fan

Ohhhh

9. Halfway Home

I’ve been drifting / Barely listening
My steed is shifting / Its heavy load

I come from Illinois / I’m still there
I may not be moving / But I’m on my way

Oh… / Oh…
Close your eyes / And you will see
No cast of heroes / Only you and me

I’m halfway home / Over and over
I’m halfway home

Now I’m walking / I’m truckin’ on
Got my old shoes rocking just like Robert Crumb

Don’t need no signposts / Made by the hand of man
Hear the mother calling / Across the land

Oh… / Oh…
Close your eyes / And you will see
No cast of heroes / Only you and me

I’m halfway home / Over and over
I’m halfway home

Every moment of every day
Is another half-step on my way
Although I advance towards my destination
I never arrive, no I never arrive

Mother cries out, travel true
Run like the water / Act like the fool
Who knows enough to know
He can’t go back
Only pressing a little farther
Holding a little harder
Make me a little wiser

I’m halfway home…

10. Road to the Stars

Left my car where the dust meets the desert
Took the road from the sun to the stars
No breath in silent surrender
No tears in the land of the lost

To the stars, to the stars
Took the road / To the stars

Will has gone and left me
Soul meets the soil
Please God, release me
To the stars, to the stars

If you lose your way in the desert
A bed you’ll make in the sand
Baked by the sun, carried on the wind
Reaching your traveler’s hand

To the stars, to the stars
Took the road / To the stars
